The Atari 8-bit computers, formally launched as the Atari Home Computer System, [4] are a series of home computers introduced by Atari, Inc., in 1979 with the Atari 400 and Atari 800. [5]

By the end of the decade they decided to release a computer system to compete with Apple and the rest of the "home" computer market. In 1979, the Atari 400 and Atari 800 were born to fulfill this promise.

To connect it to a terminal, a serial interface card had to be installed. Alternatively, the Altair could be programmed using its front-panel switches. According to the personal computer pioneer Harry Garland, the Altair 8800 was the product that catalyzed the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s. [7]

The MITS Altair 8800 was a microcomputer meant to allow hobbyists an affordable way to continue to tinker with computers since they were a growing hobby and piece of equipment at the time.

MITS Altair 8800 I acquired my Altair 8800 (along with an 8800a) shortly after starting this site and decided to document its arrival and "restoration" a bit. The machines came via UPS and, predictably, got bounced around quite a bit in transit. It's a shame the UPS folks missed all of those red "fragile" labels all over the boxes. Then again, it's obvious why they prefer the color brown ...

H. Edward Roberts, the Florida-born former U.S. Air Force officer who headed MITS, decided to design a small, affordable computer around the Intel 8080. His daughter named the new machine after the star Altair. It was the first microcomputer to sell in large numbers.
